a / an / the / nothing: articles that make you sound fluent

Articles are tiny words that carry a lot of weight. Many languages don't use them, which is exactly why getting them roughly right makes your English sound so much more natural.

The core choice

a / an — one thing, non-specific, first mention.
the — specific, already known, or unique.
(nothing) — general plurals and uncountable nouns.

I saw a dog. The dog was huge. a (first mention) then the (now known)

Cats are independent. general plural — no article

Jobs need an article

Say this

She's a doctor.

Not this

She's doctor.

Use 'a/an' with jobs.

Don't add 'the' to general statements

Say this

I love music.

Not this

I love the music. (when you mean music in general)

No article for things talked about in general.

Superlatives take 'the'

Say this

It's the best film I've seen.

Not this

It's best film I've seen.

Superlatives (the best, the biggest) always take 'the'.

One more handy rule: use an before a vowel sound — an apple, an hour (silent h) — but a university (because it starts with a "yoo" sound).
